What Is An Essay? Plagiarism is the most serious academic offence. If you are found guilty of plagiarism you can fail the assignment or the class, or be suspended or expelled from university. It should be concise and clear and it should be a statement that someone can disagree with a.k.a. an argument. Provide background information on your topic, country case, political context, etc. Ask your professor or TA to recommend articles or authors on the topic. This is best when you have a wider variety or personal choice on the topic. See what concepts are used or what lecture topic this falls under, and look over your notes and readings. The length of sections should be proportionate to the size of your essay. So a 1 page introduction to a 5 page essay is too much. The most important thing to remember after selecting your preferred citation style is that in-text citation must match the work cited list. Citation style also has to be consistent throughout the paper (i.e. you cannot go from APA to MLA). If you use sourcing engines to make your references, always double check their accuracy. Once you’ve written the whole essay, read over it again. Look at every premise you’ve used and claim you’ve made. Be aware whilst you’re reading that all arguments and authors are fallible. Think about the text you’re reading and think how you might respond to it. Thesis Statementis the most fundamental component to include in your introduction. It is your basic argument, demonstrating what you are trying to prove. It could even affect your chances of getting into a grad program, as it remains on your record, and you are required to give an explanation as to what happened . The point is, good citation is really important. You shouldn’t take the risk of being caught of plagiarism and you should give other academics due credit for their work. If I see an argument citing an author whom nobody else has mentioned, and it’s a decent argument, it will make my day. You will save yourself literally days over the course of your university career. Restate the strongest points of your essay that support your main idea. It summarizes or restates the main idea of the essay. You want to leave the reader with a sense that your essay is complete. List the points that develop the main idea of your essay. They allow you to reference as you write, and you can create and reformat your bibliography and citations at the touch of a button. Finally, make sure you formulate every claim in the strongest possible terms. The examples are not always academic, which allows the user to focus on process. This book is an easy to read and understand text which is written in an accessible style for undergraduate students. I recommend it, and would like to see it used more widely by my students. Conclude your essay by restating the main idea in different words. A student can access this book in the same way that they access a personal tutor. they can identify the problem and read the relevant section, where the response is clear and examples are provided.
